Established as a national park in 1941, Mammoth Cave is site to the worlds longest cave system, with more than 365 miles explored. Now maintained by the Mammoth Cave National Park, the area contains over 70 threatened and endangered species. Visitors are able to take a wide variety of guided and un-guided tours through the depths of the cave system. One of the most popular tours, known as the Echo River Tours, takes visitors along a boat ride along an underground river. To experience cave exploration like the first explorers in the 1800’s, there is also a three mile guided lantern tour.
Along with exploring the caves underground, there are plenty of above ground activities to take advantage of. Mammoth Cave National Park offers three developed campgrounds along with twelve camp sites in the backcountry. Activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and canoeing are also common within the park area.
